Putting on Poplinen

What do you do with your time?

I am a mom of an almost 3 year old and 16 month old. I run our family business Chris-earl.com, work from our home studio, and love every minute. Love spending time with my best friends and family and traveling, adventuring as often as possible.

Location

North Hollywood, Los Angeles

Something you love about yourself?

I guess being a goof? I love to poke fun, play, and laugh as much as possible. I’m am pretty optimistic and can usually take a tough situation and turn it into something better.

Wisdom you would share with your younger self?

I used to hate that I was half African American and half Sicilian because I didn’t look like everyone else. I was very insecure, wasn’t sure where I fit and I always felt like an outsider. I now feel blessed to be different and don’t mind that I have kinky curly hair, love my skin color and thankful to be able to be a part of two totally different cultures. I finally found a way to feel confident and beautiful the way I am. I would tell my younger self to stop caring as much what everyone thought, and let go of those doubts and fears because they’re lies. To find confidence in who I really was inside, not what I looked like.

If you had a magical power, what would it be?

To teleport.

A value you live by?

Loving people well.

An embarrassing moment you’ve had?

When i realized grapes were raisins…a year ago.

A failed moment turned into a good thing?

I was pushed out of my job when I got pregnant with our first born and I had a really tough time with all of it. But, it allowed me to put all of my sales and business skills into my husband's furniture/ceramic business. It is now our sole source of income since I jumped 100% on board.

Where do you go to unplug and retreat?

Camping in the Sierras

Something you do for your mental health?

Get plenty of exercise, and talk to God on the reg.

What do you do with your time?

I am the Founder of Darling Media, so I work on all aspects of the business and segment my time daily between the print, online, social, events and brand partnership arms. I have my eye on everything on the business front, to the internal and external creative!

Location

Hollywood, Los Angeles

Something you love about yourself?

I love that I have an interesting balance of being really serious and driven, but also SO silly. I love to joke around and can flip from being really intense on a project to joking about it.

Wisdom you would share with your younger self?

Remember to savor each experience or job or relationship that you have and never look back with regret. Everything that happens to you is for a reason, and you can learn from it if you have the right perspective. Dive into everything full force and do your best, and don’t worry so much about if things will work out or not!

If you had a magical power, what would it be?

Time traveling.

A value you live by?

Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s so important to do your best, with what you have, and be grateful for where you are at. Looking at where other people are can be inspiring, but it can easily cross the line into jealousy, envy and making yourself feel bad about your own progress in life.

An embarrassing moment you’ve had?

Accidentally cc-ing someone that I was talking negatively about on an e-mail. Learned my lesson FOR LIFE to not gossip or talk badly about people.

A failed moment turned into a good thing?

One time we went to print with a blurry image and then had to return the magazines to the printer so they could rip off the cover, sand down the glue on the spine, reprint and rebind ALL the magazines with the new updated high-resolution image. It ended up being a good thing though, as we had to apologize to the brand for the late delivery, etc. but was a lesson in checking images!

Where do you go to unplug and retreat?

I go into nature. I love camping under the stars and sitting by a campfire and reading Scott Fitzgerald stories! I need to be technology free to connect to my imagination again.

Something you do for your mental health?

I read a book, journal and pray every morning. It is a time of centering and trust for me—knowing that I can’t control my life, all I can do is connect to my purpose and try my best every day. In dealing with the temptation to be anxious, I actively think about my imagination, because essentially, as one of my favorite speakers once said, "anxiety is just imagination gone wrong."

Something you love about yourself?

I really love my headstrong nature, there have been times in my life that I wasn’t taught to value it but the more I embrace it, the more I love it.

Wisdom you would share with your younger self?

Failure is directly tied to getting you where you need to be. Welcome and embrace it. Let that shit wash over you and take you further toward your destination.

If you had a magical power, what would it be?

I would want the magic power of answering all my emails with one touch of a button LOL!

A value you live by?

You will never regret doing the thing you felt strongly about. You only regret the decisions you make out of fear.

An embarrassing moment you’ve had?

There are almost too many to count. Most embarrassing moment of my career was in 2007 and it was my first big meeting with an important press contact. I insisted on wearing spike heels to work and as we walked to lunch, my heels both stuck into the subway grate. I fell to my knees and my dress flew up over my head. I was not wearing underwear and couldn’t move my legs because my feet were still stuck. I exposed myself to my first important meeting at my first job, I think that qualifies.

A failed moment turned into a good thing?

My social presence all started as I was making an instagram account to get a job in social media. I didn’t get the job but the instagram eventually became the catalyst for finding my forever path.

Where do you go to unplug and retreat?

My best retreat was Bordeaux... or the English Countryside.

Something you do for your mental health?

I love taking time each day to take care of my skin, morning and night.

What do you do with your time?

Gosh. Well work wise, I’m often in a session making music, writing on my own, and trying to always stay creatively motivated—seeing films, going to museums, experiencing fine art/exhibits etc. I also try to exercise daily (hikes, yoga, long walks around my neighborhood etc.). My time is pretty autonomous but I do spent intentional time with friends and am a glutton for a coffee / happy hour date too.

Something you love about yourself?

That I am someone people easily trust. And quite quickly...

Wisdom you would share with your younger self?

When it gets harder, it means things will actually be better (and if you want, you get better).

If you had a magical power, what would it be?

I’d love to speak every language.
A nonconventional power hah.

A value you live by?

Kindness is very cool.

An embarrassing moment you’ve had?

I don’t embarrass very easily, but maybe not remembering I met someone when I did? ...THAT WAS BORING sorry.

A failed moment turned into a good thing?

When I was taken off of a song I wrote for a DJ. It turned out to be a good thing since I don’t think I would have loved being featured on that track. Nothing against the DJ, but more so just trying to minimize my catalogue when it comes to songs and features.

Where do you go to unplug and retreat?

I really love going to Palm Springs. The desert feels like an actual escape and it’s so close, so the convenience keeps me sane and makes an escape possible.

Something you do for your mental health?

I pray. I exercise. I Marco Polo with friends (an app—think FaceTime meets text messages). I watch TV (maybe it’s escapism but it really helps me zone out for a moment and not overthink). I also find being creatively stimulated healing.
